A Basic Guide to How the Electronic Cigarette Works

The electronic cigarette is a surprisingly uncomplicated device that transforms a nicotine liquid into an inhalable mist (vapor). Even more surprising is the fact that the technology has been used for decades in a number of other devices ranging from theatrical smoke machines to medical vaporizers’-cigarettes are different from combustible tobacco inasmuch as they do not:
make use of the combustion process
use tobacco in any form
release the chemicals and carcinogens found in tobacco smoke.
These three differences make the electronic cigarette so profoundly different. They also explain why vaping is so much better than smoking. Friends relaxing and smoking their electronic cigarettes
The Atomization Process
If the e-cigarette does not use combustion, how does it transform e-liquid into a vapor cloud? Through the process of atomization. In simple terms, atomization transforms a liquid into the fine particles that make up either a mist or a vapor. A bottle of liquid cleaner, for example, uses pressure to complete atomization where an e-cigarette uses heat. If you would like a more thorough explanation along with pictures, the Electronic Cigarette Consumer Association UK offers a free and downloadable new user guide. That said, here is a basic outline of the process by which e-cigarettes work:
when a user draws from the e-cigarette, air flow activates a lithium ion battery
the battery sends electrical current to the atomizer
the heating element in the atomizer heats the liquid
the liquid is transformed into a vapor cloud that is inhaled.
Disposable versus Rechargeable E-Cigarettes
You may have noticed that VAPESTICK carries both disposable and rechargeable e-cigarettes to give customers a choice. From an operational standpoint, there really is no difference between the two. Both types utilize the same system of atomizer, battery, and e-liquid. The main difference is how they are constructed. The disposable e-cigarette is a single-piece unit intended to be discarded once the liquid and battery are fully discharged. The rechargeable e-cigarette is a two or three-piece unit designed to allow the user to replace the batteries and liquid cartridges/cartomizers regularly. The main advantage of a disposable e-cig is convenience. Using disposables means you do not have to worry about replacement batteries, cartomizers, and charging issues. However, the savings compared to tobacco is only between 25% and 30%. As for the rechargeable e-cig, its main advantage is a rate of savings that could be as high as 70%.
Time to Get on Board
Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) estimates there are now more than 1.5 million vapers in the UK. Additional data suggests more than 2.3 million in Germany, 3 million in the United States, and hundreds of thousands in Italy, France and other countries. All of these users have found the e-cigarette to be a better choice than combustible tobacco. How about you? What do you think? Boston University professor and tobacco expert Dr Michael Siegel is a huge proponent of e-cigarettes for both harm reduction and smoking cessation.
